一、分享两个地道短语和一个生动的习语改写
如果想要表达“天问一号探测器成功着陆火星”的重大意义, 简单一些的选择比如“it's a huge step forward for China's space program” (或者“it’s a breakthrough for …”); 同学们也可以选用一些短语搭配, 来看这么两处外刊摘录:
But the question is not so much whether Beijing, which has made huge strides since putting its first man in space in 2003, can succeed. Unquestionably, history points in China’s favor, with its deep pockets, steadfast political commitment and a massive internal market for satellites and more. (中国此次火星探测器成功着陆并不让人感到意外, 自从2003年将首位宇航员送入太空以来, 这个国家已经取得了巨大的进步。毫无疑问, 中国拥有雄厚的财力、坚定的政治承诺以及巨大的国内卫星市场等有利因素) —— Bloomberg News
单词stride本义表示“大步, 阔步” (a long step), 常以复数形strid百思特网es表示“进展, 进步”, 其中关联不难理解, 有相关短语“make strides”表示“取得进步”, 可以在其中填加huge、great、impressive等来强调程度。
China’s space program took a giant leap when it landed a rover on Mars on its first attempt this weekend. (本周, 中国首次将探测器成功登陆火星, 这标志着该国太空计划实现了重大飞跃) —— Wall Street Journal
其中“took a giant leap”明显将“跳跃, 飞跃”作“进展, 进步”理解; 联系我在往期推文中分享的quantum相关活用, 此处改写为“took a quantum leap”同样可以表示“实现巨大飞跃”或者“取得重大进展”这类含义。
我再分享一处习惯用语的生动改写, 来看这么一处报道摘录:
The landing is one more feather in China's space cap, which in recent years has included landing the Chang'e 4 mission on the far side of the moo百思特网n, returning moon rocks to Earth via the Chang'e 5 mission and launching the core module of a new space station in April. (天问一号火星探测器的成功着陆是中国太空事业的又一项重大成就。近年来, 中国的嫦娥四号成功在月球背面着陆, 嫦娥五号将月球岩石带回地球, 今年四月又成功发射了新空间站的核心舱) —— CNET News
习惯用语“feather in one's cap”本表示“荣誉” (an honor) 相关含义, 后再可衍生表示“重大成就” (a big achievement), 字面即“帽子上的羽毛”, 据说源自印第安人习俗, 土著战士会用羽毛作为头饰来彰显自己的英勇无畏, 也见有其他类似的文化模仿。来写一个例子: Earning that full scholarship to Yale is quite a feather in his cap. 获得耶鲁大学的全额奖学金是一件值得骄傲的事。
摘录中将该习语改写为“one more feather in China's space cap”, 其实指的就是“中国太空事业的又一项重大成就”, 用词生动, 同学们可以参考积累。
二、分享一个熟词生义和习惯用语
再来看这么一处文章标题:
China nailed its Mars landing – here’s what comes next —— Yahoo News
单词nail除可表示钉子, 也可作动词来表示“(通过努力) 成功”这类含义, 其中关联可参考“钉子—钉牢—牢靠—成功”, 写一个例子: She finally nailed her dream job. 她终于找到了理想的工作。
上述文章标题中的“China nailed its Mars landing”指的就是“中国成功登陆火星”。我也将原文首段摘录如下:
NASA’s Perseverance rover may be taking the lion’s share of the science headlines this year but it’s about to have some stiff competition. China, which launched its latest Mars mission at around the same time that NASA launched its new rover, successfully touched down with a lander and rover this past weekend. The mission is historic for the country, which has been trying to catch up to the likes of the U.S. and Russia in the new space race. (美国宇航局“毅力号”火星探测器可能吸引了今年科学新闻报道的主要关注, 但它即将面临一些激烈竞争。中国最近一次执行火星探测任务的时间与美国宇航局发射新探测器的时间差不多。就在上周末, 中国火星探测器成功着陆, 具有重大历史意义, 该国一直试图在这场新的太空竞赛中追赶美国和俄罗斯) —— Yahoo News
此处涉及一个习惯用语“the lion’s share of something”, 字面为“狮子的份额”, 实际上用以表示“最大份额”, 也就是“the major share of something”或者“the largest part of something”, 其中典故来自寓言故事, 有各种版本, 大体上都在讲狮子和其他动物一起打猎, 最后却独占了绝大部分成果。
上述摘录中“taking the lion’s share of the science headlines”字面为“占据了科学新闻头条的绝大部分”, 实际上指的就是“吸引了科学报道的主要关注”。
类似的, 我记得在往期推文中还分享过dominate (v. 控制, 主宰, 支配, 占主要地位) 这个单词的活用, 比如“the dispute i百思特网s likely to dominate the news” (这场纠纷很可能成为新闻报道的焦点), 再比如“take the lion’s share of the science headlines”改写为“dominate the science headlines”也是可以的。
